Manually Fixing Microsoft™ Update

Although fixing Microsoft Update errors with automated tools such as SlimCleaner Plus is the recommended route, we have compiled a bunch of step-by-step instructions to fixing most Microsoft Update issues. WARNING: these guides are intended to be followed precisely.

0x800A0046 error code

To fix this error, you can attempt one of the following methods:

1st Method

  1. Click Start

  2. Click Run

  3. Type into the run dialog: control admintools

  4. Click OK

  5. Click Computer Management

  6. Expand Local Users and Groups

  7. Select Users

  8. Open the user account that you experience issues with trying to access Windows Update or Microsoft Update

  9. Click the tab titled: Member O

  10. Select the user account that you want to remove

  11. Click Remove

2nd Method

  1. Click Start

  2. Click Run

  3. Type into the run dialog: cmd

  4. Click OK

  5. Type into the command prompt: sc sdset wuauserv D:(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;SY)(A;;CCDCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRSDRCWDWO;;;BA)(A;;CCLCSWLOCRRC;;AU)(A;;CCLCSWRPWPDTLOCRRC;;;PU)

  6. Hit ENTER

  7. You should receive a message verifying that the operation was successful.

  8. Type Exit to close the command prompt.

3rd Method

  1. Click Start

  2. Click Run

  3. Type into the run dialog: secpol.msc

  4. Hit ENTER

  5. Expand Local Policies

  6. Click User Rights Assignment

  7. Double-click Impersonate a client after authentication

  8. Click the tab titled: Local Security Settings

  9. Click Add User or Group

  10. Add the Administrator and Service to the list of Users and Groups

  11. Click OK

  12. Restart the computer

4th Method

  1. Click Start

  2. Click Run

  3. Type into the run dialog: services.msc

  4. Click OK

  5. Browse through the list and find the Remote Procedure Call (RPC) service

  6. Click the RPC service once and click Properties

  7. Click the tab titled: Log On

  8. Click Local System Account

  9. Click Apply

  10. Click OK

After having completed one of the following, attempt to download Windows Updates on an administrator account.

0x80248011 error code


First, the Microsoft Internet Explorer cache must be cleared out.

  • Launch Internet Explorer

  • Click Tools

  • Click Internet Options

  • Click the tab titled: General

  • Click Delete Files

  • Ensure that Cookies and Temporary Internet Files are marked for deletion

  • Click OK and then OK again.


Take the following steps to correct the error code...

  1. Click Start

  2. Click Run

  3. Type in the run dialog: cmd

  4. Hit ENTER

  5. Type into the command prompt: net stop wuauserv

  6. Hit ENTER

  7. Type into the command prompt: cd /dc:Windows\SoftwareDistribution

  8. Hit ENTER

  9. Type into the command prompt: rd /S /Q DataStore

  10. Hit ENTER

  11. Type into the command prompt: net start wuauserv


After performing these steps, reboot your computer and reattempt to download and install Microsoft Updates.


0x80072EE7 error code


This error usually occurs due to the hosts file referring to Microsoft Update or Windows Update servers as a static IP. Microsoft uses many servers to distribute updates from different IP's. Take the following steps to correct this error...


  1. Navigate to this directory: C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc

  2. The hosts file is located in this directory. Find it and right-click it.

  3. Select Open With

  4. Choose Notepad from the list that apears

  5. Look for the IP that is associated with Windows Update or Microsoft Update. Once found, simply delete the entire line and save the changes.


0x8024402C or 0x8024502d error codes


The Windows Update or Microsoft Update server has been excluded from the accepted proxy list. It must be removed and the proxy cache cleared. Take the following steps to correct this error...


  1. Launch Internet Explorer

  2. Click Tools

  3. Click Internet Options

  4. Click the tab titled: Connections

  5. Click LAN Settings

  6. Click Advanced

  7. Delete any entries in the Exceptions section

  8. Quit Internet Explorer

  9. Click Start

  10. Click Run

  11. Type into the run dialog: cmd

  12. Hit ENTER

  13. Type into the command prompt: proxycfg -d

  14. Hit ENTER

  15. Type into the command prompt: net stop wuauserv

  16. Hit ENTER

  17. Type into the command prompt: net start wuauserv

  18. Hit ENTER


After performing these steps, restart your computer and reattempt to download and install Microsoft Updates.


0x800A01AD error code


To fix this error, you can attempt one of the following methods...


1st Method

  1. Click Start

  2. Click Run

  3. Type into the run dialog: regsvr32 Msxml.dll

  4. Click OK

  5. You should receive a message, click OK

  6. Click Start

  7. Click Run

  8. Type into the run dialog: regsvr32 Msxml2.dll

  9. Click OK

  10. You should receive a message, click OK

  11. Click Start

  12. Click Run

  13. Type into the run dialog: regsvr32 Msxml3.dll

  14. Click OK

  15. You should receive a message, click OK


2nd Method

  1. Click Start

  2. Click Run

  3. Type into the run dialog: regsvr32 Wuaueng.dll

  4. Click OK

  5. You should receive a message, click OK


After you have attempted one of the above solutions, reboot your computer and reattempt to download and install Microsoft Updates.
