Manually Delete Residual Adobe Flash Player and ActiveX components

  1. Click Start

  2. Search Windows for flash.ocx (if you are removing Flash Player 6 or later)

  3. Search Windows for swflash.ocx (if you are removing Flash Player 5 or earlier)

If the search returns no results, skip past this tutorial to the next one.

Make a note of the file path to the flash.ocx/swflash.ocx

If there is more than one copy of the file found, make a note of the file path to all copies of the file. This information is necessary in order to unregister and delete these files.

    The file path is typically:

    C:\Windows\System\Macromed\Flash (Windows 95, 98, WinME)

    C:\WinNT\System32\Macromed\Flash (Windows NT, 2000)

    C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash (Windows XP, Vista, 7)

  4. Click Start

    (Windows XP or earlier)

  • Click Run

  • Type the following into the Run dialog: regsvr32 “filepath”\”filename” /u (without quotes!)

Use the filepaths and filenames that you made a note of in step 7.

Do this for all files if you found more than one.

      Ex: regsvr32 C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash\flash.ocx

    (Windows Vista/7)

  • Type Run into the search field and hit Enter

  • Type the following into the Run dialog: regsvr32 “filepath”\”filename” /u (without quotes!)

Use the filepaths and filenames that you made a note of in step 7.

Do this for all files if you found more than one.

      Ex: regsvr32 C:\Windows\System32\Macromed\Flash\flash.ocx

  1. Navigate to each of the file paths you noted from step 7 and delete the flash.ocx/swflash.ocx files you find.

  2. Click Start

  3. Search for swflash.inf

  4. Note the location of the above file and navigate to the location using Windows Explorer.

  5. Delete the swflash.inf file. To delete a file in Windows Explorer, right-click and select delete from the menu that appears. Or, press the Del/Delete key on your keyboard.

  6. Reboot your computer

  7. We are now ready to reinstall the Flash Player along with it's ActiveX control

Install Most Current Adobe Flash Player and ActiveX control
