Fixing ActiveX Security Settings

Posted by Bob, Slimware

If your computer is denying the use of any and all ActiveX technologies, there is likely a misconfiguration of security permissions, an attempt to operate ActiveX on an incompatible platform or a corruption of essential ActiveX resources. Fixing these issues is relatively simple and requires only a few steps.

Verifying ActiveX Security Permissions

  1. Open Internet Explorer. If you do not have Internet Explorer, you cannot download and install ActiveX controls and must first download Internet Explorer.

  2. Click Tools

  3. Click Internet Options from the list that appears. A new window called Internet Options will appear.

  4. Click the Security tab.

  5. Make sure that the Internet zone is selected.

  6. Change the security level to Medium-high

  7. Click the Custom level... button.

  8. Within this list, find the listed settings and set the recommended value...

  • Allow previously unused ActiveX controls to run without prompt – Disable

  • Automatic prompting for ActiveX controls – Enable

  • Download signed ActiveX controls – Prompt (recommended)

  • Download unsigned ActiveX controls – Disable (recommended)

  • Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe for scripting – Disable (recommended)

  • Only allow approved domains to use ActiveX without prompt – Enable

  • Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins – Enable

  • Script ActiveX controls marked for safe scripting – Enable

Click OK to accept the changes made here and click OK again to exit Internet Options.

Once all the listed settings have been configured in Internet Explorer as recommended, your computer will be enabled to accept, and run ActiveX conrols in a safe manner. If you have any security software, it is best to verify that the application is not configured to block ActiveX controls from all sources. You may have to restart Internet Explorer before the changes will take effect.
